Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Scholarship 2025

Call for Nomination

Award Details
The Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Scholarship offers a grant of EUR 3,000, sponsored by the Eugene Garfield Foundation, to cover research-related expenses, including travel. This award is contingent upon the recipient’s attendance at the ISSI2025 conference,taking place from June 23-27, 2025, in Yerevan, Armenia.

Purpose of the Award
The scholarship aims to support doctoral students conducting research in bibliometrics, scientometrics, informetrics, webmetrics, or altmetrics. Its goal is to encourage innovative dissertation research in these fields.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must: 

  1. Be a doctoral candidate conducting research utilizing informetric, bibliometric, scientometric, webmetric, or altmetric methodologies at a recognized institution;
  2. Have a dissertation proposal that has been accepted by their institution or advisor but has not yet been defended.

ISSI membership is not required to apply for this scholarship. 

Administration
The Eugene Garfield Foundation sponsors the award in collaboration with the Chemical Heritage Foundation. It is administered by the Board of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI).

Nomination Requirements
Submissions must include: 

  1. The doctoral research proposal using the ISSI Doctoral Forum template, detailing the research, methodology, and significance (in English, max. 1,200 words, and up to two figures);
  2. A cover letter from the dissertation advisor endorsing the proposal and confirming institutional acceptance of its contents;
  3. An up-to-date curriculum vita.

Submission Instructions and Deadline 
The deadline for submission is February 2, 2025. Proposals should be submitted in PDF format via email to issi2025-ega@iiap.sci.am.  Candidates will receive an acknowledgment of receipt. 

Selection Process  
The evaluation will consider all submitted materials, especially the doctoral research proposal. The selection committee includes up to four members, one of whom from the ISSI Board. The committee members are:

ISSI 2025 Paper of the Year Award

The International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI) introduced the Paper of the Year Award in 2016 to encourage and honor outstanding research in scientometrics and informetrics.

Eligibility: Eligible papers must be published within the year of nomination or the preceding two years. Publication is defined broadly, including preprints, accepted online articles, or final published works. Authors of nominated papers do not need to be ISSI members.

Nomination Process: Papers relevant to scientometrics and informetrics, regardless of the journal, are eligible for nomination. Only ISSI members can submit nominations, which must include a brief justification (up to 500 words) highlighting the paper’s significance. The deadline for nominations is April 30, 2025.

Evaluation Criteria: The ISSI Board will appoint a subcommittee to assess the nominations. Papers will be evaluated based on their quality and the arguments provided in the nomination materials. One winning paper and up to two runners-up will be selected. The committee members are:

Announcement and Recognition: Winners will be informed by June 1, 2025. Award announcements will appear in a special issue of the ISSI Newsletter, and notifications will be sent to the editors of the leading journals in the field. The journals that published the winning papers will also be notified. Awardees will receive formal recognition at the ISSI 2025 conference, where one author of the winning paper will be invited to present their work. Complimentary conference registration will be provided for the presenting author.

Submission Details: Nominations, including the nominated paper and accompanying text, must be submitted to issi2025-bpa@iiap.sci.am by April 30, 2025.

ISSI 2025 Student Travel Award

The International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI) offers the Student Travel Award to encourage participation from a diverse range of students at ISSI conferences.

Eligibility: Applicants must be enrolled in an academic program at the time of submission and must have a paper submitted to the ISSI2025 conference, including the paper submission number in their application.

Application Requirements: Applicants are to submit a brief statement (up to 1000 words) outlining their interest in the field and the benefits they expect to gain from attending the ISSI2025 conference. A letter of recommendation and an updated CV/resume are also required.

Selection Process: The selection committee will assess candidates based on individual merit and the anticipated benefits for both the student and ISSI, while also considering geographic diversity. The committee members are:

Deadline for Submission: Applications should be submitted in PDF format via email to issi2025-sta@iiap.sci.am by February 10, 2025.

Notification of Results: The selected awardee will be informed on or around March 15, 2025.

Award Details: For the 2025 conference, awardees will receive travel funding up to a reasonable limit determined by the ISSI Board. Awardees will be acknowledged during the conference and featured on the ISSI blog with a photo and short bio, including their educational status and research focus.
